Bitten by Magic: Book Review

Before we begin, this review is for the second instalment of a series and I recommend reading the first review first to avoid confusion. To read that review click here: https://teegan02.wixsite.com/bibliotherapy/post/bitten-by-time-book-review

Bitten by magic is Lara Bronsons second instalment in the Vampire Genisis Chronicles, which came out today, (19th May 2023). In this instalment, we continue following Petra, a time-travelling, fake princess who washed up in the fourteen-hundreds after reciting an ancient spell, in her journey to get home. Only now, she is in grave danger, as a powerful sorceress, named Vedoma, tries to halt her plans by sending mythological creatures her way. Petra has to meet and befriend magical beings in order to replenish her, now, powerless crystal, whilst fighting to remain in existence.

Introduction

As this was the second novel of Bronson's I have read, I knew what to expect of the second book, although I do feel this book was a lot stronger than the first. The first immediate strength to this book, that I felt was lacking from the first, was the talk of Petra's family members and experiences in her original timeline. I felt this tiny addition to the book helped me to remember that Petra had her old life before arriving in medieval Romania and also helped flesh out her conciousness. I also loved the addition of a recap at the beginning of the book, (aswell as the continuation of the glossary in the back), as I always find that I have to skim through the first, to remember what has happened after the time of waiting for the next book to be written. The short length of chapters, accurate dialogue and emotional scenes, remained consistent, and occasionally better, from Bitten by Time into this book, which kept me interested and following the book correctly. The spice definitely crept up a notch from the last book, having a lot of spicy, Petra and Gabriel, scenes throughout, but still kept the discreet nature and left the book available for teen readers. The addition of more creatures, magical beings and sword fights definitely made the book a lot more exciting to me and feel more fleshed out and, surprisingly, didn't feel cringey or stale, as a lot of authors can tend to do. Gabriel remained my favourite character since the first book, never losing his charm and courage, although I did like Solomonarul's chaotic energy breaking up the calm and collected characters. The story did end in a cliff hanger, although it was to be expected knowing this is a 4 book series, but came off softly. I do feel like you could end the series here if you really wanted to, but I am definitely ready for some more 'Petriel/Gabtra' adventures!

Pros

  • Great writing style, that is accurate to the time and easy to follow.

  • Characters you can easily attach yourself too and fall in love with.

  • Emotional and intriguing

Cons

  • Waiting for the next book! I just need to read more of this series!

Conclusion

This book was amazingly magical and kept me interested for the entirety! This book had minimal trigger warnings, such as: insinuation of sex, violence, death, illness, kidnapping, swords and weapons, so overall not to bad, but if this would trigger you I would not recommend. I do recommend this book from mature teens, onward and I can see a lot of age groups enjoying this book. I rate this book a 4.5 stars with a spice rating of 1.5 and I'm so excited to read the rest of the series when they are published later this year! (Also, congratulations on publish day Lara!)
